Why I love PR
Here are four reasons why:
The people: Superb clients and colleagues – we’re lucky to have them, especially since everyone is so easy to love ;). PR people get to connect with some of the most interesting and inspiring people. From farmers to bank tellers and CEOs, scientists to inventors and investors we are fortunate enough to work with some very clever and jolly nice people. I’m also lucky enough to work with colleagues who are genius communicators. I am an open admirer of them all.
Perspective: It’s like the story of the two bricklayers when asked what they do for work. One says, “I lay bricks”. The other says, “I’m building a cathedral”! Simple, but the second guy had some healthy perspective. Great PR forces you to think about things from every conceivable angle, to step back, think hard, absorb everything, challenge every assumption and look at a problem inside-out, backwards, forwards and upside down. Then decide the best way to attack it with ruthless creativity, speed, the big picture in mind and sensible often simple (but not always) strategies.
The work: I reckon we get asked to do some of the most interesting and challenging work there is, some of which I can’t go into, but I can say I love it. From launching Kiwi innovations onto the world stage, to ensuring product recalls are communicated clearly and effectively, and helping companies win large tenders or defend against aggressors, it’s all good. Most of the work requires us to bring about a change in behaviour, opinion or belief – serious stuff, but also a lot of fun. And it's particularly rewarding when you’re working for the good guys and/or the mis-understood.
The feeling: The feeling that we really helped someone and/or their organisation, makes you feel on top of the world. Yes “making a difference” is still alive and well and I reckon those of us in a position to do it are the truly lucky ones!
Also, the surprise and delight brainstorms we get to do for non-profit organisations and clients alike, such as the PM's Christchurch fund, Habitat for Humanity and the Catholic Caring Foundation. As well as our rotating intern door from top notch AUT graduates to kids to friends wanting to check out "a day in the life of", we love them all!
If you are about to pull out a brown paper bag, I don’t care. These are some of the reasons I love PR - especially at Porter Novelli.
