Did you hear about the one with the president, the terrorist and the politician..?

In a historic moment, on Monday 2 May 2011, President Barack Obama addressed not only the United States of America but the entire world (thanks to the interwebz)  with the news that Osama bin Laden had been killed by US forces during a ground strike in Pakistan.

It was big news – long awaited (almost a decade) for many Americans and the instant public reaction seen on social media sites such as Twitter was overwhelming.

The internet was abuzz with rumours long before Obama made his statement, speculation initially about what he was announcing and then the dawning realisation about the death of America’s most wanted terrorist. News websites announced record traffic statistics, many running slower than usual, unable to cope with the influx. It was fascinating to once again watch the power of the public voice via social media, with websites picking up what was being said and turning it into a story, instantly providing credibility. Of course he’s dead, CNN says so.

John Key and Phil Goff were quick to welcome the news of the death of a man who masterminded one of the most tragic modern day events in America, as did the majority of Kiwis – taking to their keyboards to celebrate the news.

There has been countless commentary on Osama’s death for the last three days but none more entertaining than Hone Harawira who said the public should not damn Bin Laden but celebrate the positive aspects of his life! While he may not support the fact that Osama was killed and not put on trial, it’s not the smartest way to propel yourself back into public view.

Note: Post writing, Hone Harawira issued an apology (after being universally condemmed) stating his words had been misconstrued. Hmmm, it’s easy to apologise when you already have the attention you were after.

As always, I welcome any questions/comments/response. You can comment below, follow me at @NatalieBenning or email me.
